Giggs. Scholes. Neville (x2). Butt. This should have been a stroll in the park for the old Class of ’92 against the club they now co-own. But the trophy laden side (and a few celebrity friends) were shown up, as the non-league team strolled to a 5-1 victory in preparation for their long season ahead.
The game began with a competitive bite, and a 2-1 scoreline at half-time was probably a fair reflection – Ryan Giggs scoring a cheeky Panenka-style penalty for the old United boys to entertain the crowd. As the game progressed and some of the older legs were replaced by comedian Jack Whitehall and ex-England cricketers Michael Vaughan and Steve Harmison, Salford took control to dominate the second half and cruise to victory. By this point many of the crowd have given up on the result and were making their way onto the pitch – desperate for a selfie with some of their heroes.
It was a great night hosted at the AJ Bell Stadium, and the Salford City team will be looking to build on this result ahead of the new season and their assault up the football leagues. The only disappointment? No surprise appearance from a certain Mr. Beckham.
