Nike have looked back to a significant moment in Manchester City’s recent history for the design of their 2014/15 away kit. Taking inspiration from City’s Second Division (now League One) playoff final defeat of Gillingham FC in 1999, the new strip is made of the dark blue worn that day, with the yellow detailing matching the yellow stripes of the kit which is so iconic to fans of the club.

That game in May 1999, in which Manchester City were behind 2-0, before two late goals saw them secure promotion back to the old First Division, put in motion the series of events which have lead them to two Premier League titles and a place at Europe’s elite table and provides worthy inspiration for the away kit, which features a dark blue collar with a lighter blue v-shaped insert

The shirt design consists of a series of blue bands, growing lighter down the shirt, creating a striking modern graphic. Inside the back of the neck is a dark blue pennant tab with the bold statement “We are City” in yellow, while the new away shorts are dark blue and the new away socks are also dark blue with a lighter blue at the top. The away socks have a wide tonal stripe of chevrons on the back.
